Compliance With 2026 HMRC Rules for Limited Company Landlords

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax does not apply to limited companies. From 6 April 2026, MTD for Income Tax applies to individual landlords and sole traders with qualifying income above £50,000, with thresholds reducing to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. Limited company landlords remain outside this framework because companies pay corporation tax, not income tax.

Corporation tax filing remains the core obligation. Limited company landlords continue to file annual corporation tax returns (CT600) with HMRC and statutory accounts with Companies House. The standard corporation tax rate is 25 percent for profits over £250,000, with the small profits rate of 19 percent for profits up to £50,000 and marginal relief in between.

MTD for VAT still applies. If your limited company is VAT registered, you must continue to keep digital VAT records and submit VAT returns through MTD compatible software.

Companies House filing standards continue to tighten. Identity verification for directors and persons of significant control is now in effect, and software based filing of accounts is being phased in. Keeping your records accurate, digital, and submission ready is more important than ever.
